Great list for anyone trying to use linkedin effectively. Its the dark-horse in the social media world it seems... No one really knows how to use it effectively but this guide is definitely a solid start for people in B2B. I'd add that we should try to stand out using dynamic add-ons like slideshare and upload presentations. Ranging from presentations that we've given to presentations simply telling a story about you or your business. Either way, its a solid way to differentiate from the pack.

Re: Academy Awards and social media monitoring. We have multiple clients. None of them are huge consumer brands that justify a per search basis cost. I feel that some of these services are priced for large corporations.

Social Radar charges us a flat fee.

As a consultant, you may go from client to client so you're not consistently tracking a lot of searches. It's one client this week, another the next. Radian6 probably makes the most sense that case.

I honestly think you're going to have to look specifically at your needs and your budget then match them to the tools.

Re: Social media monitoring software selection: Why we chose Social Radar.

I'm curious, Jimmy, are any of these products better situated to use in a social media consultancy environment - where monitoring and reporting is being done for multiple clients vs. a single company?

Re: Shattered. Unfortunately, not everyone in B2B is active in all social media channels. Obviously Ford is on the consumer side but I'm not so sure they're engaging on the B2B side as much. It's been my experience as well that getting a URL can feel like you're battling a moving target. I've also found that you can try on Friday and it won't work and then on Monday it will with no stated change in policy.

A good rule of thumb though is if you have a brand new user creating a brand new page it probably won't work. Try adding an older account as admin and wait a couple days. Sometimes that works.

Facebook has also rejected usernames for what feel like no reason at all.

And don't bother contacting Facebook, unless you're connected they won't respond.

Re: 26 Facebook Fan Page tips for business users. There are requirements a page must meet first. Since its Facebook this always seems to be changing. I know at one point you simply had to have 20 fans before you could set your url, then it was up to 1000. Now I believe some pages can be grandfathered in. I've had luck with some and not with others.

But you are certainly right about the need to be precise once you do set it!! You could be stuck with a typo forever!
